How to Choose the Right Career after Class 12th?

Time: 3 min

While the transition from school to college is one of the biggest milestones in a student’s life, the uncertainties and challenges that come with it often make students feel stressed and restless. As they gingerly gear up to step out in the real world, they are faced with some real tough choices. Which course should be pursued after Class XII? Should I opt for a traditional course or explore something off the beaten track? What should be given preference – college or course? These are some of the common questions that strike every student’s mind.

In recent years, the task of choosing the right course has become all the more difficult because of the emergence of so many unconventional careers. While engineering and medicine continue to be safe bets, students today have the option to choose different careers that match their interests and ambitions.

Here are some useful tips that will make it easier for you to choose the right career after 12th:

Self-Evaluation

Before you embark on a journey to choose a career after Class XII, you must be equipped with the self-knowledge and understanding required to make an informed decision. It would help if you had a clear understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. Some of the questions you need to ask yourself are as follows:

– What are you good at?

– What is your personality type?

– Do you enjoy working with people or do you prefer to meet challenges alone?

– What makes you different from others?

– What gives you the most satisfaction?

While self-assessment is not the only criteria upon which you can make a decision, but it will go a long way when it comes to identifying your talents, narrowing down your options, and ultimately, choosing a suitable study programme.

Future Prospects

It’s great to choose a course that matches your goals and interests; however, at the same time, it is imperative to consider the future job prospects it offers. Some of the most in-demand jobs of today such as app development, cloud computing and social media management didn’t even exist until 15 years ago. Similarly, some of the most obvious career choices of yesterday are fast becoming obsolete. So, make sure that you stay updated on emerging career options and opt for a course with bright prospects.

Course vs College

The course vs college debate has always been a hot topic among Class XII students. There are no easy answers. It’s a question that requires deep scrutiny and must be tackled in a separate blog post. However, generally speaking, opting for your dream course makes more sense than opting for your dream college, for the simple reason that it will significantly reduce the chances of you ending up in a career that you’re not passionate about.

Liberal Arts

At times, despite everything, students end up choosing the wrong course after Class XII. Some students wish to pursue their passions along with the course that they have enrolled in. However, they are unable to do so, thanks to India’s rigid higher education system. To avoid such a situation, you should opt for a Liberal Arts university such as Apeejay Stya University. It is one of the few universities in India that offers its students the freedom to change their degree or major and re-apply credits already gained.

Professional Guidance

It is important to do your research. However, as they say, no man is an island. A career counselor, with their expert guidance and psychometric tests, will not just help you choose the right career but also save your time and effort. You can also speak to people who are pursuing (or have pursued) the programme that you are interested in. You may gain some valuable insights that will make it easier for you to make up your mind.

Choosing the right course after Class XII may seem like a daunting task. However, with the right knowledge and clarity of goals, you can make the right decision that paves the way for a satisfying career and a happy life.
