New Delhi, September 26, 2014: Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia, Co-Founder & Chancellor, Apeejay Stya University and past President of PHDCCI graced the Round Table on ‘SAARC: Towards a New Beginning’ as the Guest of Honour, organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce at the PHD House, New Delhi.
The main objective of the Round Table was to showcase various opportunities available in the SAARC nations, to look into the issues and impediments lying in way of the development of this regional block and to elucidate on the practical aspects of doing business in the member nations.
The event also saw the presence of representatives from various embassies – Mr. Mansoor Ahmad Khan (Pakistan), Mrs. Manories Mallikarratchy (Srilanka), Sayed Mujtaba Ahmadi (Afghanistan) and Dr. Nahid Rashid (Bangladesh), amongst other dignitaries.
Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia, in her address, stated that the round table being held under the theme of ‘A New Beginning’ provides a platform to discuss the required impetus and momentum to build bridges among the various SAARC nations and work together towards a mutually benefiting future. She also pointed out that economic cooperation lies at the core of SAARC's mandate. Given this, economic cooperation must continue to be a priority and SAARC's efforts could meaningfully focus on how to impart greater substance to the agreements already signed and take concrete steps towards the implementation of the same. The active participation of the business community in this process needs to be encouraged as does the involvement of the civil society
She summed it up with the famous African Proverb – “If you want to walk fast, walk alone, if you want to walk far, walk together”, urging all present to work unitedly towards the upliftment of their country and neighbourhood.
