Post-secondary education, which begins after successful completion of 10+2 schooling, provides a gateway to building a constructive career for an individual. A secondary school graduate has a myriad of career options to choose from, depending upon his / her interests, achievements and aptitude. Considering the current job scenario and societal demand, one of the most emerging career options after 12th grade is teaching. A candidate can opt for an integrated B.A. B.Ed. course or B.Sc. B.Ed. At this moment, B.A. B.Ed. the integrated course is available in limited institutions throughout India e.g. the Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) under NCERT, selected government and private universities and some colleges of teacher education.

drive to be a teacher

Teaching is hailed to be a noble profession. Working with children and adults in schools is a creative, exhilarating, and rewarding endeavour. The government flagship programmes in the field of education like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyaan (RMSA) and now integrated Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, and the implementation of Right to Education (2009) as a fundamental right has further increased the demand for professionally qualified teachers in the country. The right to education which is presently applicable up to the eighth standard will be further extended up to the tenth standard in near future, creating additional demands for the teachers.

If any 12th graduate has a genuine drive for teaching, and economic compulsion for an early job, an ultimate goal of a probable government job, the family pressure of post-job early marriage, or simply interest in reading or academics; opting for a four year integrated B.A. B.Ed. course or B.Sc. B.Ed programme is expected to bring dividends. Instead of pursuing a 3-year B.A. or B.Sc. and then 2-year B.Ed, thus devoting 5 years; one can simply join a four year integrated programme and save 1 year of time as well as money. Moreover, while recruiting teachers, it is often seen that the schools prefer B.A. B.Ed and B.Sc. B.Ed graduates over the standalone 2 years B.Ed.

Further, if a student wants to change the career track after having obtained an integrated degree from a reputed university for B.A. B.Ed., he/she will be eligible to appear for certain competitive examinations wherein graduation is the primary eligibility criteria, or can opt for a master’s degree in one of his subject areas (M.A. / M.Sc) or teacher education [M.Ed / M.A. (Education)]. In other words, the student has a professional qualification at hand, and he/she can also go for upgrading his/her career simultaneously. If any of the students are from 12th grade and has taken Commerce as a field of study, he/she is eligible to opt for the B.A. B.Ed course.

Alternatively, one successful graduate from the field of teacher education could have the option of joining a school in the government sector like Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya, Sainik Schools, Army/Navy/Air Force Public Schools, B.S.F. Schools, ITBP schools, state government schools, and private sector or any national or international schools. Apart from teaching, one has the scope for working in academic domains like a content writer or instructional designer in a reputed publishing house, counselling services, or Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in the education sector. Moreover, one can supplement earnings through private tuition or coaching, or as an entrepreneur. He/She can even set up one’s coaching institute or a school, depending upon the financial capital.

While taking admission into an institute or university, whether in a government or private sector, one has to be cautious about whether it is a recognized institution by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE). The list of recognized institutions' teacher education programmes at different levels is available on the NCTE website (

We can conclude that post-secondary education opens the door to a rewarding job. Teaching is one of the most popular post-secondary employment alternatives. A candidate can choose between an integrated B.A. B.Ed. course and an integrated B.Sc. B.Ed. programme. Teaching is regarded as a noble occupation. The recognition of the Right to Education as a basic right in 2009 has elevated the need for teachers even further. A four-year integrated B.A. B.Ed degree is likely to work wonders for Indian teachers. Students can also pursue a master's degree in the academic areas (M.A. / M.Sc.) or pursue a teacher education course at the same time. One can earn revenue by offering private tuition or coaching, or by opening his or her coaching institutes or schools. Alongside teaching, one can also work in academic fields such as a content writer or instructional designer. The NCTE website contains a list of approved institutions offering teacher education programmes at various levels (
